This vintage Zuni pendant is the epitome of Zuni style, featuring 25 hand cut pieces of turquoise, set in a circular pattern with a leaf like formation of turquoise in the center. These designs created from many tiny stones, are known as needlepoint. For needlepoint work, Zuni artists create the silver settings first, and then hand cut each stone to fit within the settings they made. This is a much more technical approach than the way most jewelry artists work, where they build their silver around the stones, unlike the Zuni who do the opposite, and shape their stones based on their silver.
The back of the pendant has a locking pin so the chain can be removed and it can be worn as a brooch on a collar, sweater or hat band.
